Who are you?
Hi! Catherine here - I'm the owner and founder of Rebel Flame Candle Co. I use they/them pronouns and am originally from Buffalo, NY. I am the Head Wax Slinger and run most of the show, with a little help from my loved ones who step in to help out the business by packing orders, giving the thumbs-up to new products, handing out business cards, and answering questions. It certainly takes a village, and we have an amazing one here! My fiance Alex is an especially good helper - they have been Head Candle Sniffer for quite some time and they have a serious knack for scent blends and helping me develop and brainstorm new product ideas. They approve everything before it hits the store, and it shows!
I have a strong background in education and youth development with a focus on social justice education and identity development. In short, this means that I have a long track record of professionally talking with people - especially young people - about what they love in this world and how they can be their most authentic selves. Rebel Flame Candle Co. combines my vision for a better future for marginalized people with my love for handcrafts and creating beautiful, exciting things - it's truly the perfect storm of fight meets love, and I'm glad you're here to do it with me.
How do you live up to your mission and vision?
We strongly stand in support of justice - racial justice, climate justice, decolonization, disability justice, gender/queer equity, and class equity, to name JUST a few. At least one candle from each collection we release is designated as a fundraiser candle, and a portion of the profits are donated to an organization who we feel aligns with our mission and will carry out good work in support of these movements. We work hard to perpetuate a following of compassion, justice, and (un)learning by boosting marginalized voices and standing firmly against hatred and bigotry. We are a trauma-informed, sex-positive, science-based, and sustainability-focused company, and in fact, much of our social media presence is dedicated to unpacking systemic oppression and educating ourselves and our followers. We also make a specific point to use only ingredients that are ethically and sustainably sourced and to use packaging that is entirely reusable and/or recyclable. Learn more about this in the Product Info section below!
We are a queer/trans-owned company, so even our existence is social justice! Supporting Rebel Flame does a lot of good for me (Catherine here), who has been systemically affected specifically by transphobia and ableism in corporate America that prevent me from being fully embraced and supported in a full-time work environment in my field.
Where do you ship?
We ship to the US and Canada. Because of shipping restrictions to the UK, we're unable to ship there at this time, but may consider expanding our international offerings in the future if we're able!
I'm a new customer! Do you have discounts for the first purchase?
Use code WELCOME15 at checkout to receive 15% off your first order! This includes tarot readings as well as physical products.
Do you take wholesale or bulk orders?
Yes! We can do large orders of our candles by the half dozen, with a minimum order quantity of 1 dozen. Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we can get you a quote and timeline. (Please keep in mind that I may need to order additional supplies to complete your order, so allow at least 2-3 weeks to let us make sure that we can get everything we need to complete your order.)
What ingredients do you use in your candles?
We strive as hard as we can to produce the best possible candle to light up your home and your life with the most sustainable and high-quality ingredients we can find. We use a soy wax in our candles and wax melts that produces a low-temperature, long-lasting, and consistent burn. Our fragrances are blended in-house to provide a unique scent profile you won't find anywhere but here - we don't use essential oils in our products because contrary to popular belief, they don't produce a strong scent as they are not designed to burn, and many can be dangerous to pets and pregnant people. All of our fragrance oils are lab-tested to ensure that they burn cleanly and safely to you and the environment.
We also put our products through extensive testing to make sure the wicks, containers, and fragrance oils work together in the right combination to give you the strongest scent and safest, most consistent burn possible.
How about soap ingredients?
While you can find the ingredients for each individual soap on the label and the product page, we tend to use the same basic recipe for our cold process soaps - with few tweaks depending on what additives we use. Our soap base contains olive oil, coconut oil, cocoa butter, shea butter, and castor oil - a blend that produces a creamy lather and a gentle and nourishing feeling on the skin. Just like in our candles, we use house blends of lab-tested fragrance oils that are certified skin-safe and will leave you begging for more!
Whoa whoa whoa! Why does my soap ingredient list include sodium hydroxide? Isn't that a caustic chemical?
In any other situation, you'd be right - sodium hydroxide, also known as lye, is a caustic alkaline chemical. However, to make soap, we use lye as a reagent to complete a chemical reaction called saponification - the lye molecules join with all of the yummy oils and butters in the recipe, and the oils and water become soap! Once the reaction is complete, there is zero lye left in the soap and it is totally skin-safe. It is impossible to make soap without lye - even melt-and-pour soap bases had to be created with lye before being packed and sold to makers. I promise, it's a centuries-old method that's completely safe.
Let me repeat - there is no lye remaining once the oils have saponified - your soap is completely safe to use.
How sustainable are your products?
It's incredibly important to us to make a product that serves you just as well as it does the environment. We do our best to develop each product and its packaging to leave as little waste behind as possible. You can reuse or recycle most, if not all, of your product packaging! Our candle jars are reusable - just melt the remaining wax out and wash them out with dish soap and water. We try to use as little plastic as possible when packaging products and fulfilling orders. You can reuse the crinkle cut paper your order is packed in for gifts and mailing your own packages, and all of the paper packaging we use is recyclable. (The one sacrifice we make on this front is bubble wrap to make sure your candles don't arrive to you shattered, but you can also reuse your bubble wrap!)
We also sustainably source our ingredients and make sure that we educate ourselves on the production and impact of our products on people and the environment. We only use plant-based soy wax in our candles, and our soap recipe is cruelty-free, vegan, and palm-free. (While it is possible to find sustainably sourced palm oil and we support soapmakers who do, we prefer to avoid the issue altogether. Our palm-free recipe works for us!)
Caring For My Products
How should I properly care for my candle?
When you first receive your candle, it's tempting to light it for just a few minutes to test out the scent and blow it out to burn again later. However, it's a good plan to burn your candle for at least an hour or until you achieve enough melted wax to reach the sides of the vessel - what we candlemakers call a "full melt pool." This keeps your candle from "tunneling," or developing a burned up core down the center along the wick without using up the wax on the outer rim. It also allows your candle to disperse the fragrance oil better while burning.
Candles can be dangerous if left unattended - please don't keep your candle lit if it's out of sight, and keep it away from pets, children, plants, and wayward elbows. Don't forget to keep the melt pool free from external debris - that means wick trimmings, matches, and other stuff. Put out your candle after 4 hours, and make sure to keep it on an even, heatproof surface.
Why should I keep my wick trimmed?
Keeping your wick trimmed to 1/4 inch prevents sooting (that black gunk that builds up on the vessel and your walls) and overheating. You candle will burn cleaner, slower, and more fragrantly if you care for your wick!
When should I stop using my candle?
It's smart to stop burning a candle when you're left with a mostly-empty wick tab and about 1/2" of wax at the bottom. Do not keep burning a candle that's reached the end of its wick, as much as you love it - it's a better idea to just order a new one so that you don't risk the jar overheating and exploding. (Pro tip - you can also set the jar in boiling water and pour the leftover wax into a silicone mold or clamshell package to make wax melts, or pop it in the freezer and take the wax out that way! Don't want to waste a single bit of that amazing smell...)
I hate the smell of smoke when I blow out my candle... Help!
You're right, it's so frustrating to spend hours burning a candle and letting the amazing scent waft through the room just for it to be masked by the smell of smoke when you blow it out. Instead, you can use a wick dipper tool or toothpick to dip the wick into the pool of melted wax and put out the flame - minimal smoke, no mess, and super easy!
Returns & Refunds
I'm missing part or all of a product I ordered. Can I get a refund or replacement?
Send us an email at email@example.com and we'll sort the issue out!
I'm not satisfied with the quality of a product I ordered from you/it arrived broken. Can I return it for a refund?
A product can be returned within 30 days of delivery provided it remains in its original packaging, unworn and unused. Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to process your return and we will send you a shipping label to return the product. If we determine the product is in returnable condition once it reaches us, we will issue a refund. We cannot accept returns on soaps or other body care products.
If your item arrived broken, please let us know - while we do our best to package everything securely to avoid breaking in the mail, we can't control how the courier service treats the package and sometimes things get crushed or tossed around unintentionally harder than they should. We can come to a solution together - just email email@example.com and we'll send you a replacement item.
Can I get a refund on my tarot reading?
Unfortunately, tarot readings are non-refundable once booked unless something comes up on my end that makes me unable to deliver the reading. In that case, I will issue a refund.
What type of reading is best for me?
For most people without a specific area of focus, a general reading is the best way to go. If you have a specific problem, I offer specialized readings for healing, friends and family relationships, and romantic relationships to provide a more pointed result. If you need quick guidance and would prefer to receive a shorter reading more quickly, the mini reading is a great, inexpensive option to provide immediate guidance for a fraction of the cost.
What can I expect when I book a reading?
Once I receive your order in my shop, you'll receive an email from me with the link to a survey to complete your booking, where you can provide more information about yourself and ask a question. I cannot complete your reading without this survey, so the quicker you complete it, the sooner I can get to your reading! You'll then receive your results via private YouTube link once I've completed your reading. If you need accessibility accommodations to be able to enjoy your reading results (such as closed captioning or a PDF transcript), you can request these in the intake survey.
What's your turnaround time for reading results?
Provided you fill out the intake survey in a timely fashion, about a week but usually less. (If you book a mini reading, you should see your reading results in about 2-3 days.) Please add 3-5 business days for handwritten, physical mail readings.
Is an online/remote reading really effective?
Understandably, some people question the effectiveness of a tarot reading over the internet. The answer to this is complex, but in short - I can read energy just as effectively remotely as I can in person, provided I have the client's name and their question to help me connect to their intentions. Just ask my clients - their satisfaction is proof that a remote tarot reading is a great option!
How can I figure out what kind of question to ask?
Deciding what question to ask when you book a reading can be a complex process, especially for folks who haven't gotten a reading done before and don't know what to expect. Some situations feel more straightforward than others and it can be challenging to phrase your question in a way that works well with tarot. Keep some things in mind about the art of tarot before deciding on your question:
help you tap into your intuition
show you parts of yourself that need attention or point out issues you aren't actively considering
give outside perspective on a problem
connect your with your true authentic self
remind you what you really hold important
offer insight on what potential paths forward could look like
empower you to heal, find your power, and manifest what you want
make decisions for you
tell you what will happen in the future
tell you how other people feel about you
tell you what you want to hear, instead of what you need to hear
give definite or absolute answers on a problem (no yes or no questions - but, I will help you reframe your question to something that we can talk about!)
